Beginner Scuba Diving FAQ’s: All you need to know

What does it feel like to breathe underwater?

There is nothing like taking your first breath underwater. It will feel surreal, majestic, and humbling. You will feel one with the ocean, and connect with the vibrant marine creatures and the colorful reefs with every deep breath you take underwater. It is an incredibly fun and amazing experience you ought to try at least once in your life. The owners and instructors at Baki Divers all became addicted to scuba diving after their first breath underwater. Perhaps you will too.

Who can learn to dive?

Almost anyone can learn to dive, as long as you are at least 10 years old and are generally fit and healthy. There is no maximum age, so it can definitely be a part of your good retirement plan, family holiday, or gap year adventure!

Do I need to get a medical certificate?

It depends. As a beginner, we have to make sure you are healthy and fit for diving. Have a look at the questions on the first page of this medical statement. If you answer ‘no’ to every question, then you do not need to see a doctor. At the same time, if you answer ‘yes’ to any question, then you need to see a doctor before you can dive. The doctor does not have to be a diving specialist and should complete the second page of the medical statement. You can see a doctor where you live or we can also find a doctor for you in Dauin.

Is it dangerous?

No it is not. Not only is scuba diving extremely fun for the family, it is also safe, as long as you listen to your Instructor and follow the safety rules.

Are there any dangerous sharks?

There are no dangerous sharks in Dauin. If the stars align your way, you might see a whale shark or a reef shark but it will definitely be more frightened of you.

Can I run out of air?

It is possible but highly unlikely. Your Instructor will teach you how to easily and constantly check your air supply. It’s as easy as checking your car’s fuel gauge to see if you still have enough gas. To be extra safe, we always end the dive with at least a quarter of the supply left, or the equivalent of 15 minutes dive time.

What happens if I feel claustrophobic?

You will always be close to your instructor and within arm’s reach for whatever reason as a beginner. If at any time you begin to feel uncomfortable or claustrophobic, just signal to your Instructor and together, you can slowly head for the surface to get you settled. You are in safe hands with our instructors, as they have managed all types of situations for thousands of students, and we can assure you that you will be guided in the safest, most comfortable way underwater depending on your own level of confidence.

Will my ears hurt?

Your ears won’t hurt as long as your equalize your ears underwater. Sometimes, you might feel some discomfort in your ears when you’re on a flight or diving down the deep end of the pool. The air pressure that is increasing with the change in altitude/depth causes this discomfort. Your instructor will teach you a very simple technique to prevent any ear pain, underwater and in the plane, called equalization.

Can I dive if I wear glasses?

Your best option will be to wear soft contact lenses while you dive. You can also rent a diving mask with prescription lenses (supplies are limited so please give us prior notice if you are in need of prescription masks!)

Can I still dive if I easily get seasick?

You won’t be taking any long boat trips, but just in case we also have seasickness medicine available on board.

Can I dive when I am on my period?

Yes, you can. If a period will not stop you from doing your daily activities, it should not stop you from scuba diving too. The myth about sharks attracted to period blood is exactly what it is called: a myth. You may ask our female staff for more questions about this matter.

Is it cold?

No it is not, at least not in the Philippines. Our average temperature is around 28 – 30̊C all year round, though sometimes it can be colder. Not to worry, you will be wearing a wetsuit to protect you from the cold.

Can I still dive even when it’s raining?

Yes, raining on the surface will not be a problem, as it does not affect us scuba divers underwater.

How long does a dive last?

Each dive will be about 45 minutes to an hour maximum, or depending on your air supply.

Do I need to buy/bring my own scuba equipment?

No, you do not need to buy or bring your own gear. All rental scuba gear you’ll ever need is included in the course price. You just need to bring your swimsuits.

Will I be in a large group?

At Baki Divers, we prioritize exceptional customer service and unforgettable dive experiences. At such, we specialize individual care and small groups, but also cater to your own needs.

Can my Instructor speak English?

All the instructors in Baki Divers speak excellent English.

Can I communicate with my Instructor underwater?

One of the first things you learn as a beginner before any dive is how to communicate underwater through hand signals. Your instructor will go through these with you comprehensively..

Can I dive in Dauin at any time of year?

Yes, you most definitely can.
